Baby’s Here, Now What?

You took the most comprehensive childbirth class in Kankakee County.  You had a doula by your side supporting you and your partner through a long labor.  You even had your placenta encapsulated in your home.  You have done everything you can think of to be prepared for your new life.

Your partner was off that whole first week helping you get adjusted.  Your family has been coming over a few times a week to see the newest adorableness you have created.  You even had friends bringing by meals every few days for the first month.  It was such a blessing to have all that support.

Now what?

Baby is here and you are still not feeling like you have a routine in place yet.  Every time you think you are managing to juggle this new balance of house and baby, your little darling throws a wrench in your system!

Society makes us feel like having a baby is no big deal.  So many women do it every day.  You should be up and back to normal right away.

That’s not true!

You need time to heal.  Where the placenta detaches from the uterus is considered an open wound.  You need time to let that wound heal.  Not to mention, life as you know it has changed.  Whether it is your first or your sixth, there are always changes.

You need to be able to feel human again!!!

Enter a postpartum doula.  She does not stop supporting you when your baby is a month, 3 months, or 6 months.  You decide when you need, or no longer need, her support.

Postpartum support comes in many forms depending on your personal needs and wants.

Would you like to be able to nap and snuggle with your baby while your household chores get done?  Postpartum doulas do that!  We can do dishes, laundry, and even sweep the floors.

Would you like to not have to worry about dinner and concentrate on learning how to breastfeed in your new baby carrier?  Postpartum doulas do that!  We can help with meal preparation, fixing you a snack while you nurse, and even assist you in learning how to finagle that wrap.

Would you like to be able to take a nice, long, hot bath with lavender candles and Enya playing in the background with no disruptions?  Postpartum doulas do that!  We can hold your little nugget and keep them content while you get some alone time or even while you get some household chores done if you prefer to do it yourself.

Would you like someone to just sit and talk with you?  Are you feeling all alone now that everyone has gone back to living their lives?  Postpartum doulas do that!  We can sit and talk with you, give you that adult interaction we all crave.  Your days of loneliness are gone!

Your postpartum doula can help you to not only feel confident in your abilities as a parent, but they help you to feel human again.  Couldn’t we all use that?
